Guns

Freedom of firearm access has made hate expressions more dangerous than ever. White supremacists are one example of those who use firearms as a way to intimidate, threaten, or attack political opponents. Armed opposition is a hallmark for hate groups and civilian paramilitary organisations. This will ensure that the public does not feel threatened or intimidated by these extremists, whether they be ideological, violent or racial.

Hate

Jason Hayes, a New Jersey member of the LGBTQ community, organized a nationwide rally last year to end gun violence and protect LGBTQ civil right. The rally, called DISARM HATES, attracted nine individuals from Los Angeles who came to Washington, DC to support Jason. Now, this bill has been reintroduced to Congress as a companion legislation to the Hate Crimes Prevention Act. This Act would prohibit those convicted of misdemeanor hate crimes from purchasing or possessing firearms.

Gun laws

A new federal bill, known as the Disarm Hate Act, would prevent would-be gun buyers from buying guns if they have committed a hate crime. Although the Disarm Hate Act relies on existing laws in states on hate crimes, it would also ban individuals convicted of such crimes from buying guns. The Disarm Hate Act would require background checks on potential gun buyers. This is a requirement already enforced by the FBI.

Extreme risk laws

To prevent mass shootings or gun homicide, extremity risk laws were introduced. This law gives petitioners the ability to ask a judge for temporary confiscation of a firearm from a dangerous person. Although these laws are not yet widely accepted by the public they are being applied in certain cases by states. In some instances, these laws have prevented mass shootings and gun homicides. These are just a few examples.

Pulse nightclub shooting

Disarm Hate, a new documentary following nine LGBTQ people participating in a national march to end gun violence. Harvey Fierstein narrates the story of the activists who fight the NRA and fight to reform gun laws. They also challenge America's obsession with gun violence. Take a look at the film.

Sandy Hook Promise

Several groups, including the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, Gays Against Guns, CeaseFire PA, and the Generation Progress Fund have endorsed the Sandy Hook Promise to Disarm Hate Act. This legislation was presented last year as a response to the Pulse shooting which claimed 49 victims. However, it died in committee. After the tragic anniversary of Pulse's death, Senator Casey brought the bill back to the committee. While the Disarm Hate Act is a far way from being enacted, community members can take steps to further advance it.
