Hunting Tips for Early October Deer: Maximize Your Harvest

non toxic shot for pheasant

Here are some early October deer hunting tips to maximize your harvest. While the big flurry of scrape-making won't happen until the tail end of October, buck activity is already picking up. The largest bucks are opening their primary woods scrapes. I recently placed a camera on a scrape and got 4 different bucks hitting it on a regular basis. I took pictures of them all in daylight so I could follow their pattern.

Light rattling is a great early-october hunting tactic.

Light rattling is an excellent deer hunting strategy if you are looking for deer in the early months of October. Effective rattling is achieved by mimicking the sound of two brothers arm-wrestling. Do not imitate a drag-out, knock-down fight. Instead, you should imitate buck's antlers dancing against one other. Buck sparring is what happens after velvet has disappeared. The buck activity in this period is much less aggressive, yet still crucial. To sell your ruse, use a soft social buck call.

Bucks typically shed their velvet during the early part the rut. A light rattling sound can mimic sparring and scare off bucks. This sound is often associated with challenges when deer are in estrus. If you stand in front of an existing scrape this sound can be convincing.

High-pressure days are best after a storm blows through.

After a cold front blows through, the temperature stays between 65 and 35 degrees. Buck movement and activity increase as a consequence. On the backside of the front, moderate winds can be tolerated. The high-pressure system puts mature bucks on their feet, and this makes them more likely to wander underneath stands. High-pressure hunting days should be followed by a front for maximum success.

The New Moon provides stationary hunters with a distinct advantage. This occurs because the setting moon coincides with the setting sun, deer's preferred food source. The New Moon will also increase the amount of daylight hours during which deer move. On Sept. 7th and 8, this pattern will be less prominent. Hunts should be conducted during the evening hours as the high-pressure system is typically active.

Avoid feeding areas

Avoiding the area where deer eat is one of your best hunting tips. This is a crucial time of year to harvest acorns. When they are on their way to the nuts, deer often scrape at the feeding areas. Important to keep in mind that not all feeding areas occur at once. Bucks will go to certain areas for food that deer prefer.

You can also hunt in the morning and evening to avoid deer aggregation. You can still find bachelors groups in this period, even though bucks are typically late-summer feeding. If you want to hunt large groups, it is worth hunting in the evenings or mornings. Even though deer are active during daylight hours they still move around quite a bit.

Avoid low-key activity

Mature bucks rarely move much during the autumn months. If you hunt near the field edges, you might not be able to see a buck for several days or even weeks. You can avoid this by choosing a hunting area close to the buck's core. You should keep your October's price high.

While there are some advantages of hunting during this lull, it's important to remember that a buck's activity tends to drop off during this period. To avoid this, you need to match your hunting efforts to the deer's preferred time of day. You should wait until deer are present before you hunt in October. For early season deer, social grunts work best. A good way to get a response is tickling your tines.
